ABOUT FLYING,

ST. LOUIS

AND THE BABY

CHICK

CONVENTION

A couple weeks ago the Inter-

national Baby Chick Association

held its annual convention in St.

Louis and the House of Davisson

being members in good standing

decided to attend as per usual.

As in other years, we drove

our car to Omaha, grabbed a

Mid-Continent Airlines plane for

Kansas City, a TWA plane from

there to St. Louis. This flying

business, as long as the weather

is nice, is strictly far from sensa-

tional. We climbed in the plane

at Omaha, started to remove our

coats, looked down and we were

passing over St. Joseph. Took a

look at the good looking airline

hostess and we were in Kansas

City. Just like that.

Boarded TWA plane in Kan-

sas City and before you could say

super-spateratical, we were in St.

Louis. Those of you who have

never flown may wonder what

it is like, but believe us, there is

positively no thrill whatsoever.

While flying a mile high or so,

we would say to ourselves, now

just supposing a motor would

quit, or a wing would come off or

something. Couldn’t even work

ourselves into a scare that way

for the things seem so substantial

and everything seems so com-

monplance that it just doesn’t

seem possible for anything to

happen. However, were we ever

to hit rough weather in one of the

things, bet we would be the first

to sign the no flying pledge in the

future.

Fifty or sixty years ago, more

or less, a Worlds Fair was held

in St. Louis. Believe us when

we say that since that time this

city has changed but very little.

Where other cities have nice new

buildings, this city has the same

buildings erected years ago. Their

exteriors are black and grimy

with smoke of ages. Where other

cities are building new buildings

on every corner, St. Louis has

buildings standing empty. Surely

a miserable run down looking

place compared to other large cit-

ies we have visited lately.

In its favor, St. Louis has the

finest parks, zoo and other civic

enterprizes in the country. Its out-

door Civic Opera is known the

world over. But other than that,

you can have St. Louis and we

will take Seward.

Regarding the Chick conven-

tion, will say that this was the

finest we have ever attended. It

had more and better exhibits, bet-

ter lectures and a better place in

which to stage the convention.

There were over 6,000 members

registed and that is a lot of people

to attend any convention. We at-

tended half a dozen lectures and

picked up a few ideas which we

hope will aid in our production of

better chicks. We also purchased

a few new items for our Hatchery

which should not only enable us

to save a little time, but also do a

better job.

While in St. Louis, we had the

pleasure of seeing the New York

Yankees drop a ball game to the

St. Louis Browns by the score

of eight to two. It was a perfect

demonstration of how a good ball

team can also play poor ball. The

Yankees had a half dozen fielding

errors that any sand lotter would

have been ashamed of. However,

that is what makes a ball game.

If the leading team always played

in its top form they would never

lose a game. It is the uncertainty

and the razzing of the crowd that

peps the thing up. Would like to

have been there the following

Sunday and seen Ted Williams

and his sluggin’ Boston team

play the Browns.

Well, the convention is over

for this year and so is runnin’

around. We have to snap into it

and get a few things done. Our

new hatchery building is about

finished, but we have a billion

other things to do before the

snow flies.
