The Cass City volleyball
team exhibited what every
coach considers a key fac-
tor in winning during their
match with visiting Vassar
Monday, Jan.
24.
Character.
Coach Sherry Bader's
spikers jumped out to a huge
lead against the Tri-Valley
conference foe, only to
suf-
Thursday's match with
Marlette.
and Monroe shared the top
spots among Hawk scorers.
Tate recorded game scoring
honors with 17 points
(20-
23)
that included 7 aces.
At the net,
Cass
City was
led by seniors Jodi LaRoche
and Darcie Monroe, who
combined for
6
kills.
LaRoche also received
credit for
6
digs on the night
in a routine outing for the
talent rich veteran.
The
Owen-Gage Bulldog
spikers fell to visiting
Carsonville-Port Sanilac
Monday night in a laborious
match that went 5 games.
The loss puts Coach Judy
Campbell's spikers at
3-2
in
the North Central Thumb
League, 5-4 overall, heading
into Saturday's tournament
at Elkton-Pigeon-Bay
Port.
Owen-Gage, who has also
been defeated by league ad-
versary Akron-Fairgrove,
will return to
NCTL
play
Monday, Feb.
7,
when they
entertain Peck.
The
2
league defeats don't
bide well with the veteran
mentor, who hasn't lost a
conference title in over a
decade.
"This is a young team.
They have potential, but
don't play with any guts. It
(the team) doesn't have se-
nior leadership. I need
a
leader," says Campbell.
Owen-Gage let a golden
opportunity
get
by in the
opener, that may very well
have cost them the contest,
after they jumped out in
front
9-5.
Lorraine Nichol's Tigers
roared to
a
12-9 advantage
behind the serving of senior
Misty Sherman, who regis-
tered the final 5 points on
a
7-0
run. Sherman's well
placed serves included aees
at points
8-9
and 1 1-9.
After a side- out, Owen-
Gage tied the score at 12-all
with 2 cross court spikes by
freshman Kate Powers,
squeezed between
a
Brandy
Parks ace serve.
The
game,
which lasted
over 30 minutes, saw
2
lead
changes before the hosts
gained a 15-14 edge on a
hard spike from juniorAngie
Wildman.
However,
CPS
was able to
gain a side out, and Maija
Schommer recorded the
game's final
3
points to give
the visitors a 15- 17 win.
Owen-Gage jumped out
big again in the 2nd game
of the night as Shana Adkins
LaRoche's 11 points
(14-
18)
and Monroe's
8
points
(1 3- 14) also contributed
OF
the service line for the win
ners. The duo collected
5
fer a disappointing 16- 14
defeat as the Hawks ran into
some strong serving from
the Vulcan squad.
"We
were setting the ball
,
up well until we went cold
in serve reception. We just
couldn't pass serve," stated
Bader.
It would have been easy for
the Hawks, who had hopes
of defeating league leading
Lakers on the previous
Thursday, only to be turned
back in
3
straight games, to
give up after the initial set-
back.
Instead the lady Hawks
fought back and recorded
3
relative easy wins by the
scores of 15-5, 15-6 and
15-
10.
The victory puts Cass City
at 14-5-3 heading into

Leading 5- 1, Bulldog
Melody Abfalter, with the
help of some fine net play
by
Wildman, stretched the
hosts' lead to
8-1
with
3
ser-
vice tallies.
The duo switched roles for
the Bulldogs' 1
1
th, 12th and
13th points of the game as
Abfal ter's mid-court spike
gave Owen-Gage a 12-4
margin.
CPS, like in the first game,
made another run at the
hosts.
Sherman registered the
contest's next
4
points for
CPS to bring the visitors
within
