EXHAUST SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Fire/Health Hazard
B Do Not use non-metal, flexible duct.
m Do Not use metal duct smaller than four inches
in diameter.
b Do Not use exhaust hoods with magnetic latches.
m Check that exhaust system is not longer than
specified. Exhaust systems longer than
specified will:
-Accumulate lint.
-Shorten the life of the dryer.
- Reduce performance, resulting in longer drying
times and increased energy usage.
Failure to follow specifications may result in a fire.
l
Do Not exhaust dryer into a chimney, furnace cold
air duct, attic or crawl space, or any other duct
used for venting.
l
Clean the exhaust system every other year.
. Do Not install flexible duct in enclosed walls,
ceilings or floors.
Accumulated lint could result in a fire or cause
moisture damage.
. Exhaust the dryer to the outside to prevent
exposure to substances in the gas fuels and
combustion which may be harmful to your health.
The moisture and lint indoors may cause:
- FIRE HAZARD from lint collected in dryer;
- Moisture damage to woodwork, furniture, paint,
wallpaper, carpet, etc.
- House cleaning problems and possible health
problems.
Failure to follow these instructions could result in
fire damage or personal injury.
1.
You can get the parts you need for installation from
your Whirlpool parts distributor or your local
plumbing and heating store.
2. We strongly recommend exhausting the dryer to the
outside to prevent large amounts of moisture and lint
from being blown into the room.
3. Exhaust outlet at rear of the dryer is located as
shown in (Figure 17). Detailed instructions on
spacing for side and rear clearances can be found
in the section “Instructions for Recessed or Closet
Installation.” Information on minimum spacing side
to side and to the rear is also found on a label located
on back panel.

4. The exhaust may be routed up, down, left, right or
straight through the wall.
5. The exhaust duct should terminate with an exhaust
hood to prevent back drafts. The outlet of the hood
must be at least 12 inches from the ground or any
obstruction. A louvered exhaust hood, Part Number
279399 is available from your Whirlpool dealer or
parts distributor. An exhaust hood with a 2% inch
outlet creates more back pressure, but may be used
with shorter systems. Never use an exhaust hood
with a magnetic latch.
6. The maximum length of the exhaust system depends
upon the type of duct used, the number of elbows
and type of exhausted hood. The maximum length
for both rigid and flexible duct is shown in the chart,
(Figure 16).

to assemble the ductwork, screws can catch lint.

For your personal safety, a metal elbow and at least
2 feet of metal duct must be used at the outlet of the
dryer. This reduces the possibility of lint blocking the
exhaust system and minimizes the potential of a fire
hazard. The 2 feet of metal duct also helps make any
service that may be needed easier and prevents
crushing the flexible metal duct when the dryer is
moved to its final operating location.
